Il Maestro Claudio Abbado: «Cuba, Paese all’avanguardia. Lo sa anche Veronesi»

Il maestro Abbado, tra i primi firmatari dell’appello pro Castro, risponde alle critiche.

Girando il mondo, in tanti anni di lavoro, ho sempre cercato di trovare i lati positivi di ogni cultura. Per imparare qualcosa di nuovo, per crescere: in fondo siamo tutti un po’ ignoranti. Prima Vienna, poi Berlino e Londra, e poi ancora il Venezuela e Cuba: in queste e altre tappe ho cercato costantemente di venire a contatto con gli aspetti più validi, più forti, più importanti di quei Paesi. L’uomo, per sua natura, è portato invece a distruggere o fare emergere quasi esclusivamente i lati negativi delle altre civiltà. Mi sembra lo si stia facendo ora con Cuba.

Conosco Cuba, ci sono stato più volte e ci tornerò. Perché, mi chiedo, non vengono rese note le cose positive di una cultura come quella cubana? Proviamo a mettere da parte, almeno per una volta, la strumentalizzazione politica che si tende a fare di ogni cosa e proviamo a riportare semplicemente dei fatti. Stranamente delle cose più valide che ci sono a Cuba non si parla mai. Cominciamo dalla ricerca medica, che a Cuba è all’avanguardia. C’è un dottore, Gregorio Martinez Sanchez, che sta lavorando alla ricerca per debellare il cancro e che ha «scoperto» una nuova e, a quanto pare, importante cura. Solo che, piccolo dettaglio, ha anche bisogno di poterle realizzare, di metterle in pratica queste sue ricerche. L’ho fatto sapere al professor Umberto Veronesi, che qualche settimana fa mi ha scritto una lettera, in cui dice che appoggerà il progetto di questo medico cubano.

Lo farà perché lo ritiene giusto. Ma la ricerca medica all’avanguardia non è l’unico aspetto fortemente positivo di quest’isola. A Cuba, forse i potenti se lo dimenticano, non esiste l’analfabetismo, che è invece assai diffuso in molte altri parti del mondo. A Cuba con un po’ di terra libera, non ci si mette a speculare: loro preferiscono fare degli orti enormi, che serviranno poi a tutti (esempio che è stato ripreso poi da altre nazioni). Sono tornato recentemente all’Avana e ho visto che in cinque anni ci sono stati miglioramenti dal punto di vista del restauro per case e piazze. A dicembre ho portato la Mahler Chamber Orchestra per dei concerti, a gennaio l’Orchestra Giovanile Simón Bolívar, di cui facevano parte anche 44 cubani. C’è uno scambio bello e proficuo fra il Venezuela e Cuba. Uno scambio legato alla musica e al balletto.

Il Venezuela è più avanti dal punto di vista della formazione musicale, grazie al sistema di Antonio Abreu che coinvolge 240.000 (duecentoquarantamila!) giovani salvati dalla strada e Cuba invece è più avanti dal punto di vista del balletto: il loro è uno scambio culturale per imparare a vicenda, per crescere, come dicevo prima. Il fatto poi che ho portato quei 44 musicisti cubani a Caracas e che l’anno prossimo li porterò con tutta l’orchestra in Europa, smentisce che i cubani non possono uscire. Cinque anni fa sono stato a Cuba con la Mahler Jugend Orchester e abbiamo portato materiale, corde e strumenti musicali, che lì mancano, perché, non dimentichiamolo, è un paese povero e in quanto povero andrebbe aiutato, non attaccato. C’è poi un gruppo di bravissimi musicisti cubani, ‘Ars Longa’, che ho voluto sostenere e che vengono regolarmente invitati al Festival Gesualdo in Basilicata. Li abbiamo fatti conoscere l’anno scorso attraverso una tournée che ha toccato anche Bari, Matera, Roma e Bologna.

Insomma Cuba è anche questo, non è solo Guantanamo, che è invece una prigione USA. Mi chiedo anche perché non si parla quasi mai di nuove idee e realtà italiane, a mio avviso, molto importanti per l’ecologia e per l’ambiente, come i treni con nuovi locomotori che trasportano i Tir, o altri camion, attraverso il Brennero, da Monaco di Baviera a Innsbruck, Bolzano, Trento, Verona con nuovo innesto dal Veneto all’Emilia Romagna. Oppure di quella cittadina vicino a Trento che sta realizzando un progetto impostato sul traffico e riscaldamento totale con l’utilizzo di energie naturali (pannelli solari, idrogeno). Questa cittadina ha vinto fra l’altro il primo premio per il miglior progetto in Europa.

Cuba: crear fármacos únicos, una receta contra el embargo

Varios inventos que no tienen análogos en el mundo paso a paso están convirtiendo la industria farmacéutica en una locomotora de la economía cubana.

Económicamente ya es el segundo sector, después de la extracción de níquel, que más ganancias proporciona a las arcas estatales. Pero también el que tiene mejores perspectivas para romper un día el bloqueo a Cuba, impuesto por Estados Unidos. Al menos así lo creen los isleños que están orgullosos de trabajar en este sector.

Crear los medicamentos únicos impulsa incluso a los países que mantienen el embargo a buscar vías para comprar la producción isleña. Es una táctica de La Habana, y una de sus primeras armas en este combate virtual es la vacuna Heperprot P, un descubrimiento que permite evitar las amputaciones a los diabéticos que padecen de úlcera de pies.

Este fármaco, dice el director del Centro de Ingeniería Genética y Biotecnología, Gerardo Guillén, "rompe el paradigma de que siempre los productos, los nuevos desarrollos se han obtenido en los países desarrollados, en Europa o EE. UU.". Antes no existía el tratamiento para las úlceras avanzadas, por lo tanto es un producto único, exclusivo, con patente cubano, asegura el científico. 

Vidatox, Cuba's New Cancer Drug

Havana - Specialists from Cuba’s Labiofam biopharmaceutical laboratories are now marketing a homeopathic cancer drug called Vidatox in Latin America and Europe.

The drug is made from the venom of a scorpion endemic to Cuba and will be on the world market before the end of the year, Labiofam director Jose Fraga Castro said at a press conference.
Vidatox is a sublingual homeopathic solution with proven analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects.
Extracted from the blue scorpion Rhopalurus junceus, a species endemic to Cuba, the drug’s active ingredients are five low molecular weight peptides.
Vidatox promotes anti-tumor activity, and when combined with conventional antineoplasic treatment, results in better quality of life and a longer life for cancer patients, Fraga said. “We are not talking about substituting that therapy, but about simultaneous use, producing synergic effect for promoting anti-tumor action,” Fraga said.
As Labiofam continues to research new formulas, it will continue to be involved in international cooperation to eradicate vector-borne diseases and to implement programs for preventing dengue, especially in Third World countries.
Another of Labiofam’s main lines is supporting these nations with experts and the transfer of experience and technology.
Its actions also will reach Asian countries like China — which is having problems eliminating malaria in some of its southern regions — and Iran and India, which are dealing with pathologies caused by mosquitoes and rodents.

Cuba Trains U.S. Doctors

Havana - Language and ideology pose no obstacle to learning for U.S. students Emily Brown, Mercedes Charles, Jack Lubka, and Ihsan N. Muhammad, who say they are grateful to Cuba for the opportunity to enroll in the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) based on the idea of helping the needy wherever they may be.
   “I am not going to say that either one of the two countries has the best answer,” said Lubka, referring to medical education programs in the United States and Cuba.
   “It is a good opportunity to use the differences in the two education systems in treating our patients,” the young man from North Dakota told The Havana Reporter.
   “There is no other university where I would like to study medicine,” affirmed Brown, who, like her three compatriots, is a first-year student at ELAM.
   A native of Pennsylvania, Brown explained that unlike most medical students in the United States, she will not be a slave to money upon graduation, because she will return to her country in 2017 debt-free thanks to Cuba.
   “Because I will not have a debt of 250,000 to half a million dollars, I will be able to help my friends and family who do not have a doctor at this time,” she said.
   U.S. citizens should not be afraid of studying at ELAM, from which 67 doctors from 15 U.S. states have graduated, she commented.
   Currently 114 students from the United States are studying at ELAM after being selected by the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization (IFCO), founded and headed by the Rev. Lucius Walker until his death.
   “The education here is more than good, and even prepares us for obtaining our license in the United States,” she added. 
“If that were not enough, we are trained to provide help in any situation, and not just to people who can pay for it.”

The United States has a good healthcare system, but it is very difficult for people who are poor or do not have health insurance, she said.
   Cubans can receive medical attention at any time of the day, and their treatment is not based on the level of their income or their skin color, said Charles.
   The big difference between the U.S. and Cuban education systems is that the first one prioritizes treating the patient without a large display of high technology. “Anybody can use a machine,” she commented.
   For her part, Brown said that she will be better trained because of the amount of contact she has with patients in Cuba. Patients here have not been bothered by the fact that she is from the United States, she noted.
   “I feel free to say that I am from the United States and no one bothers or reprehends me,” affirmed Muhammad. His
only problem, he says, is that in the summer it is harder to find the vegetables and fruits he needs as a vegetarian.
   Lubka complained about rapid-fire Cuban Spanish, but noted that learning the language will help him to treat Spanish-speaking patients back home.

Referring to their dreams upon arriving in Havana in 2010, Emily said she wanted to learn about Cuba, learn the language, and learn medicine, all of which are facilitated by ELAM’s guarantee of food, books, and a dorm, she noted.
   “ELAM has allowed me to make friends from all over the world,” said Lubka, who shares his dorm room with students from five other countries.
   “Being able to talk to the Sahrawi girls has made me realize that we are more alike every day,” said Mercedes Charles. Meanwhile, Ihsan said his friends include students from Belize, Sao Tome and Principe, and Malaysia.
   “I feel lucky to meet students from all over the world,” said Brown. The wide range of customs seen at the school convinced her that world peace can be attained, because all human beings have the same hopes, she commented.
   “I used to live in very violent neighborhoods, and here I feel perfectly safe, because the Cubans help us,” she said.

ELAM in Statistics:
opened: February 1999, with an enrollment of 1,900 young people, chiefly from Central America, devastated in 1998 by Hurricane Mitch, which left 19,000 people dead or missing.
Founded: November 15, 1999, by then-President Fidel Castro, during the 9th Ibero-American Summit.
Graduates: 9,959 in seven graduating classes. About 1,000 doctors are expected to graduate in July 2012.
Facilities: Initially, all students were in classes at the ELAM buildings in western Havana, which cover 1.2 million square meters. Since 2005, third-year students attend classes in any of 21 medical faculties nationwide, studying side by side with Cuban students until they graduate.
Current enrollment: 1,399 students from 89 countries in prep to second-year courses. A total of 18,744 students from 108 countries are enrolled, and three-quarters of them are the children of workers and farmers.

Founding rector Juan Carrizo Comments: 
The ELAM is marked by its humanism and internationalism, Carrizo said in an interview with The Havana Reporter.
In the 12 years since its founding, the school has been a standard-bearer of internationalism for the Cuban healthcare system, he said.  While recognizing donations to the school by institutions and individuals and the existence of five aid programs, Carrizo said that ELAM’s costs are paid by the State.

Visita al LABIOFAM, produttore dell’ESCOZUL

Stamattina finalmente sono riuscito a trovare il tempo di andare alla fine del Municipio avanero di Boyero per informarmi presso la sede della farmacologica cubana LABIOFAM su come è possibile ottenere per malato di cancro delle boccette del miracoloso Escozul, l’antidolorifico antidepressivo realizzato a Cuba partendo dal veleno sello Scorpione Azzurro.

Già di buon ora c’era una bella coda soprattutto di cubani residenti all’estero, ne ho visto diversi con in mano un passaporto USA ma anche alcuni italiani. E’ proprio il gran numero di italiani a “preoccupare” il laboratorio. Le richieste, soprattutto da parte dei nostri connazionali, sono già superiori alla produzione del medicinale, tanto che oggi, per esempio, non sono riusciti ad accontentare tutti.

Per ricevere l’Escozul è necessario andare di persona col proprio passaporto e visto (se stranieri) o mandare qualcuno di fiducia con una delega del paziente e con la cartella clinica del malato che è meglio se viene tradotta in spagnolo o almeno in inglese. Vista l’enorme ed inaspettata richiesta è tassativo che non danno più 1 set di Escozul a persona. Inutile andare con più deleghe di diversi pazienti. Questo è anche un metodo per bloccare sul nascere speculazioni e abusi, che qualcuno ha già provato a fare.
